In the 26th Velvi Discourse, Gurumahan Asks: Where Do You Go When You Sleep?

What does it mean when the life force( Uyir) wants to return to its own nature? When does it return to its own nature? Think about sleep. After eight hours of work, you go to bed. Why do you sleep? Because sleep is your natural state.

So eat well. Work well. Sleep well. Through this balanced way of living, you may gradually attain the knowledge of Brahman.

Many people say, “I go to bed at night, but I cannot sleep. I lie this way, then that way. I keep waiting, but sleep does not come.”

Why does this happen? Because of anxiety, worry, fear, and constant thoughts. These disturb your natural state.

Look at a child. A child eats, plays, cries, and sleeps naturally. When a baby cries, the mother often knows, “The baby is sleepy.” After a short while, the child falls asleep peacefully.

The mind naturally wants to return to sleep. But what is this natural state? When you are in deep sleep, you are not aware of the body. You are not aware of the mind. You are not aware of the knowledge you have gathered about the world.

So where do you go?

You return to your own nature.

In that state, there is no love or hatred, no pleasure or pain, no loneliness, no hunger, and no desire. There is no lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride, or even religious identity.

There is simply a state of nothingness.

And what do you experience when you reach that state?

When you wake up after deep, dreamless sleep, you may say, “I slept peacefully. I feel refreshed. I experienced bliss.”

What does this tell us?

Your own nature is peace.

Your own nature is bliss.

Your true nature is beyond both virtue and sin, beyond pleasure and pain.

Every day, we enter this state when we sleep, but we do not consciously recognize what we are experiencing.

There are three aspects to our worldly experience: consciousness, perception, and emotion.

Consciousness is the fundamental awareness. Perception takes place through the mind and intellect. Emotion and sensation are experienced through the body.

We experience the world through the five senses: seeing through the eyes, hearing through the ears, tasting through the tongue, smelling through the nose, and touching through the skin.

Through these senses, we experience the world and gather knowledge from it. We experience happiness and pain, pleasure and suffering, and all kinds of emotions.

But all these experiences are temporary. They rise and fall. Happiness comes and goes. Pain comes and goes. Pleasure comes and goes.

What does every living being truly seek?

Not only human beings, but all living beings seek happiness. Whether it is water, plants, reptiles, birds, or animals, every living being naturally moves toward happiness.

But what kind of happiness are we really seeking?

We are seeking lasting happiness.

We are seeking a happiness that does not rise and fall.

That permanent happiness is bliss.

A person may have a loving family, a beautiful home, wealth, comfort, and everything they need. Yet they may still say, “I have everything, but I am not happy.”

Why?

Because having everything externally does not guarantee inner happiness.

That is why happiness comes first.

What does everyone truly want?

Happiness.

Everyone is seeking happiness, because deep within, everyone is seeking the permanent bliss that is their own true nature.
