In the 26th Velvi Discourse, Gurumahan Says: “Understand, Prepare and Transform Before Nature Teaches Us”.

Here Gurumahan speaks about the disastrous flood during the year 2015 leading to Infrastructure Collapse, Transport Paralysis, and casualties!

Rainfall is a seasonal change in nature, a natural event. The rain fills the lakes and ponds, flows through the channels meant for it, and eventually reaches the sea. That is its natural course.
We often hear about heavy or intense rainfall in the news. They say, “There will be heavy rain today.” Let it rain. Isn’t that good? Heavy rain is good for Tamil Nadu. We say that rainfall of this magnitude has occurred once in a hundred years. No one expected it. It was an unexpected disaster. When people were affected by it, what did we do? We came together without looking at caste, religion, race, colour, language, state, or even country.
What did we do? We saved people. Who saved them? We did. What did we save? Did we save those who had already died? No. You simply did your duty. The moment you expect recognition for it, you have already lost the very meaning of duty. When we saved people and their belongings, what did we really preserve? We preserved humanity. Humaneness still exists in us. Compassion still exists in human beings. Concern for one another still exists. The rain came to reveal all of this. The cry for help was also from God. And who was the one who heard that cry and came forward to help? God himself. God helped God. That is not merely help; it is the fulfilment of one’s duty. Until then, we may not have done anything for people we did not know. But today, we do not even know who they are. That is why we must help without asking who they are. So many people who went forward to help have themselves gone missing. This is why, whenever something painful happens, we see that after a storm comes calm. After this flood too, better circumstances have emerged. We must learn to prepare before disaster strikes. Today, we are beginning to think about how things should be fifty years from now. But that was not how we lived earlier. We simply thought that living for today was enough. If we think and act wisely, it will benefit not only Tamil Nadu but the whole world. We often think that disasters happen only here. No. In China, for example, millions of people have been affected by heavy snowfall. But what are they doing there? They are systematically preparing and managing the situation.
The same kind of flooding that occurred here has also occurred along the River Thames. Britain too has suffered losses worth several crores. But there, there was no major loss of life; there was mainly damage to property.
When such situations arise, they have systems in place to move people to safer locations. But we were unable to do that immediately. The water came at night, and no one could anticipate it. It was an unexpected event.

That is why I say: Understand and become clear before disaster strikes. Do not wait to be destroyed in order to change. If we believe that we must be destroyed before we learn our lesson, nature will destroy us to make us change. But we will not perish; we will learn and transform.
