Gurumahan, in the 22nd Velvi Discourse, talks about Conscience, the True Self, and Your Divine Birthright.

What is your birthright? Is it not to attain the highest state? A poor person longs to gain great wealth. An ordinary worker aspires to reach a higher position. In the same way, there is a supreme wealth, a supreme treasure, a supreme position, and a supreme state that every human being must attain. That is your true Self, your inner state, the Divine state, the state of Truth, and the state of Reality. Is the state you are living in now the Truth? No. You are living in a state that is not the Truth. That is why, when your body is hurt, you say, "I am hurt." You say this because you identify yourself with the body. But are you really hurt? No. Your body is hurt. Your awareness recognizes the pain of the body, while you remain beyond it, witnessing the body's suffering.
That is why, whether you believe in God or not, people speak of the conscience. Think about it. In movies, the conscience speaks. Does it speak to you as well? It should. Who is this conscience? Is it someone else? No. It is your own true Self. Your conscience is not different from you.
What does your conscience tell you? It never encourages evil. It always guides you toward what is good. It asks, "Why are you acting this way? Why are you doing such unjust deeds?" But you push it away because it keeps leading you toward the right path. If every person simply follows their conscience, that is enough. One who does not obey the conscience must then obey society, the law, and God. That Divine power itself is the conscience, and you are that Divine power.
Once you realize this power within, everything changes. When you discover the spiritual power within yourself and understand your higher state, righteousness awakens within you. Divine awareness arises. That Divine awareness expresses itself as boundless love, supreme wisdom, immense power, infinite bliss, perfect beauty, and profound peace. One who reaches this state sees the same Divine power in everyone. Such a person sees all people as one. When you see everyone as one, no evil thoughts arise. You desire only that everyone should live and prosper. Therefore, become your own true power. This power does not come from outside. It is your birthright. It already exists within you.
You suffer only because you have forgotten this power. The moment you realize it, you remain joyful always. Joy is the natural state of life.
Does the Guru suffer? Does the Guru feel sorrow? Pleasure and pain belong only to the body, not to the Guru. The Guru sees you, but not through the eyes alone. The eyes are only instruments. The Guru sees through awareness. When you travel in a car and it gets a flat tire, people say, "Oh, you got a flat." Did you get a flat? No. The car got a flat. When the car stops, people say, "You have stopped." Have you stopped? No. The car has stopped. The driver still remains. In the same way, I remain beyond all these things, unmoving. The body runs, but I do not run. The hands move, but I do not move. The mind becomes tired, but I never become tired. If I were to stop, blood circulation would stop and breathing would cease. When you reach this wonderful state of the true "I," why should you worry? Why should you suffer? I remain in that state and experience constant bliss. I know my own power. Why do you forget yours? The duty of the great sages is to remove your forgetfulness and help you remember your true Self. These Velvi ceremonies are not performed for the Guru. They are performed to remind you of who you truly are. When the Guru conducts a Velvi, live with purity at least for those 21 days, with purity of body, clothing, food, mind, and life force. If you live this way for twenty-one days, you will naturally wish to remain in that state forever. When the Velvi ends, you may think you have to return to ordinary life. Yet, many times, it becomes difficult to come down from that elevated state. At times, I cannot even open my eyes. Even when my eyes are open, I am not there. The eyes may see you, but I do not see you. I remain established elsewhere. My dear ones, just as the great sages and enlightened beings of the past support the orderly movement of the Universe, you too are meant to live as enlightened beings in this very age. You are Divine.
