In the 16th Velvi discourse(2005-2006), Gurumahan says that devotion to God is only the first step on the spiritual path. A seeker must go beyond devotion and seek the guidance of a true Guru, live by Guru's words in order to realise the Supreme Self within.
That one truth which, when realised, equals attaining everything, is the very power that moves the Universe. That same Universal energy shines within every person as the Self. This wisdom is not new. For ages, the spiritual tradition of Sanatana Dharma in Bharat has shared this truth with all of humanity.
Yet many people believe that such teachings are meant only for a few. Without truly understanding these principles or realising God as it truly is, they remain at the first step of devotion. Feeling that devotion alone is enough, they continue striving across many births. But in this present birth, one receives the rare opportunity to make a sincere effort to realise the truth.
Finding a Guru itself is the fruit of the merits earned over many lifetimes. However, merely finding a Guru is not enough. The Guru shows the path that leads to the divine state.
When a seeker develops complete faith in the Guru, they begin to follow his guidance with sincerity. By valuing every word of the Guru, understanding his teachings, and putting them into practice, the seeker gradually moves closer to realisation. Whatever we deeply trust and hold firmly in our mind will ultimately guide our life, and with unwavering faith in the Guru, that guidance leads us toward the highest truth.
