Santhosam Podcast: Guiding Light of Spiritual Wisdom

5thVelvi(1995)-A guru is one who is the mother of many millions of people! | பல கோடி மக்களின் தாயாக இருப்பவர் தான் ஒரு குரு!

Santhosam Season 5 Episode 17

To achieve a high goal or fulfill an important duty, one must transcend hunger, thirst, and bodily discomfort. When the mind is fixed on the task, food and sleep lose their grip. For those whose work itself becomes their vision, the body’s demands fade away.

Consider building a new house: from laying the foundation until the day of housewarming, do we wander elsewhere or indulge in leisure? No, we remain focused. Similarly, in marriage preparations, until the ceremony is complete, we discipline ourselves, even adjusting our body and habits for the occasion. When a duty must be completed within a given time, hunger does not dominate; instead, divine thought fills the mind. When thought is united with the Divine, the body is forgotten.

This is the essence of penance. Disciples often ask: “Guru, What do you do in meditation? Do you simply sit? Do you merely think?” Such questions arise because they imagine austerity as inactivity. But true penance is immersion in divine thought, not outward display.

A Guru is like a mother. Just as a mother rushes to fulfill her child’s request whether by cooking, buying, or improvising, so too the Guru responds to the disciple’s yearning. Though one disciple may ask, he represents the longing of many. The Guru, as the mother of countless souls, acts for all.

When disciples gather, each shares their experiences. Through meditation, they realize that consciousness is not confined to one place. Just as one can meet a friend in another town, so too in higher states of meditation, one can connect across worlds and galaxies. We are united by consciousness, and wherever one ascends, others can perceive it.

Even a single day of meditation can give a glimpse of the “birthless homeland” - a realm without sorrow. That taste of bliss reveals what liberation truly means. Yet, the truth lies hidden within us. We forget it. Forgetting the Self is what we call birth. Through countless lives we wander, forgetting again and again.

The Guru, like a teacher, feels responsible to uplift disciples. Other enlightened beings watch, unseen, asking: “Paranjothiyaare! Will you help your children pass this test of life?” The Guru vows: “In this very birth, I will lead them to liberation.”
