During the olden times, mantras and breathwork were used to purify the mind. 1:4:2 is the ratio for breathing exercises. Breath in for 1 count, hold for 4 counts, and breath out for 2 counts. Inhale of breath is ‘pooragam’, holding the breath is ‘kumbagam’ , exhaling is ‘resagam’. These three stages should be performed properly. When you inhale for 1 count, holding should be for 4 counts and breathing out should be for 2 counts. Same way When you breath in for 2 counts, breath should be held in for 8 counts and exhalation for 4 counts. When inhalation is for 3 counts, holding in should be for 12 counts and breath out for 6 counts.

The Sastras and the Pranic Science recommend that inhalation should be for 16 seconds, holding of breath should be for 64 seconds which is one whole minute and exhalation is for 32 seconds which is half a minute. Practicing this breathing technique brings well-being to the body and  peace to the mind, to face any problem. This is mentioned in the Thirumandhiram, but it cannot be practiced on our own without the guidance of a Guru. A Guru provides proper step-by-step instructions, starting with inhaling for 2 seconds, holding for 8 seconds, and exhaling for 4 seconds by using the above mentioned ratio. Over time, the timing is gradually improved until we reach the formula mentioned in the Thirumandhiram, which involves holding the breath for one full minute.
